All About Turning Chain – Crochet #11

Turning chain in crochet is the extra chain before you begin with the next row. It helps in moving up before starting with the actual stitch of the design. The height of the chain varies with the type of stitch which is being used in the design.

Single crochet – At the end of the row, chain 1 before starting with SC in the next row.

Half double crochet – At the end of the row, chain 2 before starting with HDC in the next row.

Double crochet – At the end of the row, chain 3 before starting with DC in the next row.

Treble crochet – At the end of the row, chain 4 before starting with TR in the next row.

Turning chain in row –

When crocheting in rows, after finishing the last stitch of the row, simply make turning chain (required number of chain = type of stitch) as per the type of stitch, to gain height for the next row and start working with the desired stitch.

I have used double crochet stitch to explain this more in detail. 

Similarly, make number of required chains, as per the stitch type.

Turning chain in circle –

When crocheting in circle, join the end with slip stitch to complete the circle. Before starting with next round of circle, make turning chain to gain height for the next circle (required number of chain = type of stitch) and continue with the stitch specific.

Once again, i used double crochet stitch to explain the stepwise process.

Similarly, make required number of chains for each stitch specific as explained above.
