Hanging decor – Birds and bugs – DIY

This hanging decor pc is very close to my heart. I made this for the nursery of my little boy. I always loved the idea of a window in the bedroom, which opens up to a tree full of flowers and fruits. Waking up early in the morning to the sounds of the birds always made beginning of my day beautiful. This is my attempt of executing the thought for my little boy’s corner.

Lets list out the items required to make this.

  1. Rings – small size – 6pcs. I picked up the rings used for packaging kitchen utensils. You can also use card salt container and cut the rings out of the box. Click here to learn how to cut the rings from the salt container.
  2. Ring – 6″ – 1pc. Here again i picked up the ring used for packaging. You can use the wooden / metal hoop of the same size.
  3. Satin ribbon – 1″ wide. Colors of your choice. I chose pastel shades in aqua and purple.
  4. Thick Thread – Any color of your choice in coordination with the colors of the ribbons. I used silver thread.
  5. Some artificial shrubs, flowers – You can buy one cheap from dollar general or any store. Need not to be very expensive one.I also used some dried wild flowers.
  6. Hot glue gun

  7. Mini sized birds and bugs – I picked up birds from Michaels and made ladybugs myself with the help of thermocol sheet ad paper cutter. Click here to understand how to make these with thermocol sheet.
  8. Sharpies / permanent markers – Black and Red
  9. Ruler
  10. Pencil

Lets start the process – I used the items which were easily available to me. There are always possibilities to use other items and make variations of this.

  1. Wrap all the rings (6 small and 1 big) with satin ribbon. Seal the end with hot glue.
  2. With the help of hot glue stick the shrubs and flower pcs to the ribbon wrapped rings. Its better to pick up small sized leaves and flowers. If these are available in stick, then cut out the pcs to the small sizes, which can easily fit in the ring. Once these flowers and shrubs sets in, stick the birds and bugs in the center, as shown in the image.
  3. Cut 6 strings of the thick threads – 14″ – 2; 18″ -2; 24″ -2.
  4. Fold the strings into half. Use the folded end of the thread to lock the ring. Thread should be at 180 degree from where the birds or bugs are set. It should be on a straight line. Refer the below image
  5. Divide the big ring in 6 equal parts and mark the points. These points will be used to tie the smaller rings, which are ready.
  6. Tie the smaller rings in ascending or descending order. The order will be repeated again, since there are total 6 rings. It should be  – 7″ – 9″ – 12″ – 7″ – 9″ – 12″
  7. Use the same points to make the loops to hang the pc. Cut 3 strings of 10″ each. and tie 2 ends of each string on opposite points.
  8. Lastly, after hanging the pc, entangle additional artificial shrubs pcs/ flowers. I used some wild dried pcs. Use hot glue to stick it to the strings. Your pc is ready to hang wherever you like.

In my house this piece is hanging near the window of the dining room.

Amazing blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it
from somewhere? A theme like yours with a few simple tweeks would really make my blog shine.
Please let me know where you got your design. Bless you

Thanks for the appreciation. it wasn’t downloaded from anywhere. This is an original project. I work on recycling the daily usage items which we usually trash. This project is one of such projects.
